  • Black Belt - 4th degree

Professor Marcos Carvalho,

BJJ Black Belt 4th Degree.

IBJJF 191834 / JJGF 4623

In 1995 Professor Marcos Carvalho started training Judo, and in January 1999 he left Judo training behind and started training Jiu-Jitsu. He trained at Gracie Barra from White Belt to Purple Belt. At that time he completed his undergraduate studies and then had to move to another city in the state of Sao Paulo to start his master's studies. In the new city where he moved to, there was no Gracie Barra school, so Marcos started training at the CheckMat Team, where he graduated to Brown Belt in 2007, and then graduated to Black Belt in 2010 by Professor Felipe Vidal.

Professor Vidal was born in Teresópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. He graduated as a black belt with the "Nova União" Team and after a while he went to teach Jiu-Jitsu in the state of São Paulo with the CheckMat Team. Thus, the lineage of Professor Marcos is as follows:

Carlson Gracie > André Pederneiras > Robson Moura > Felipe Vidal > Marcos Carvalho.

Professor Marcos competed for 17 years (1999-2016) in all Jiu-Jitsu belts in several states of Brazil. He had the opportunity to compete in several important championships organised by the "Confederação Brasileira de Jiu Jitsu" (CBJJ/IBJJF) - from north to south of Brazil. During his journey, Professor Marcos learned Jiu Jitsu directly from some of the best BJJ professors in Brazil by attending seminars and classes with these top Black Belts.

As a black belt, Professor Marcos competed for more six years until 2016, then decided to retire from competitions due to joint inflammation. He has a very broad knowledge in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and enjoys training with or without Gi.

In 2015 he came to New Zealand for the first time to complete part of his PhD experiment at Massey University, when he met his partner. In 2016 he had to return to Brazil to finalise his PhD. In 2018 Marcos returned to New Zealand for good, he got married and in 2021 Professor Marcos Carvalho joined WāhiBJJ and became a major contributor to the students’ knowledge, teaching and helping to grow the WāhiBJJ Team in New Zealand.
